Just a comment, nothing else. Difficult to say, without having seen the circumstances, might have been totally reckless, might have been a totally safe speed for...

Ah, so we're extending it to harnesses now?

Compebreastive impacts aren't very similar to road impacts - I can't recall many international rally special stages including 38-ton wagons leaping out from behind trees. When a big accident happens, it'll go on happening for a fair distance until the energy is dissipated - if a tree gets in the way, the tree will not come off best. The roll cage and harness prevent the occupants from following a different path to the car in that rollercoaster ride.

A roll cage is effective in increasing roof strength in a roll crash. It can also increase the strength of the pbuttenger cell in a fore-aft impact, but it has to be fairly damn comprehensive to do that, in a way that's going to get in your way every time you get in and out of the car. Have you ever sat in a car with a full cage? It is NOT a pleasant experience, and they are not attractive.

Modern cars are bloody good at protecting the occupants. The real problems come because a three-point belt isn't that good at restraining you - windbags cover a bit of that. But nobody would accept a compebreastion-style five point harness tightened to the sort of degree that's used, in order to pop down the shops. A three-point is better than nothing.

There's also the small factor of the human body not being particularly great at holding internal organs in place at the sort of impact forces that happen at very high speeds.
