Fine and points and the magistrates hand out very stiff fines. I spent a day at court watching...

Difficult to say, without having seen the circumstances, might have been totally reckless, might have been a totally safe speed for the road and conditions. There's many a time I'm driving on a motorway at 90 and would love to do another 30 or maybe 40, even if the family is with me- if there's nothing else around, you can slow to the legal limit if something else comes into view. But I wouldn't do it, not because of the safety issue, but because of the likelyhood of getting done and the likely penalty.

I once did 135 in my old Rover P6 V8, but I got away with it.

If you were doing this with other cars around, you deserve everything that's coming. If not, maybe you don't, but it's probably coming anyway!

Speed limits are enforced only by going above the actual limit, not on what is safe, which is why enforcement is becoming so unpopular. Also, speed limits themselves are being reduced to rediculous levels, so the whole speeding issue is being reduced in credibility.

If a sensible speed policy was in place, no-one would argue with it. But as it is, responsible, save drivers are being convicted for stupidly low speeds, (not that I'm suggesting that 130 is a stupidly low speed).

I don't think any of this is much use to you, other than a consolation that not everyone would have considered your speed to be unsafe depending on the actual conditions, which of course are strangely of no interest to speed enforcement methods.

If you really felt confident and safe, then the best thing would be to explain this and why, rather than to try to pretend you didn't realise your speed.

Good luck!
