I downloaded and read his plan in 2001. It was very comprehensive and covered just about every topic that had to do with energy now and in the future. Did you read it and miss it? If you didn't read it, then you have no basis to comment since you simply don't know anything beyond what a interest group might be saying.
He stuck the drilling in there because he understood that, in the interim before the technologies are "ready", we *needed* more domestic energy sources *today* (or ASAP) to "bridge" the time delta. It isn't a hard concept to understand that his plan was addressing *both* the tactical issues AND the strategic ones. Had people addressed the pan as a complete package, instead of "cherry-picking" the pieces they didn't like, it may have pbutted back then. And, had it pbutted, we would have a greater domestic supply today AND been 4-years ahead in government funding for future energy technologies (which by the way will be a profit center for the current oil companies since I butture you they will be investing in future energy too!). In this case, the Democrats blew a very good opportunity to say they helped pbutt a bill that funded new energy technologies because they couldn't swallow the drilling in Alaska piece. (It's the preverbal cutting ones nose off to spite ones face situation..the dems are really good at that).
