2.60 a frickin gallon! 2138
On Sat, 13 Aug 2005 21:42:00 -0400, "James C. Reeves" Are you really nieve enough to think he thought that would pbutt? He knew goddam well that if he snuck in...

Exactly - if you want to be isolationist, you have to let someone else tell you what to do. "Abandon China" was their message, "or else". We chose the "or else", as we should have.

Look, the axis powers were evil, imperialist, "take over the world" guys that, if left alone, would have done just that, slowly. They would have owned so much of the world that they would have been able to dictate economic terms to us on all fronts, or simply refused to trade, prolonging the great depression possibly to the present day. Unless, of course, they came up with some good way to actually invade our country.

Consider this - Hitler was working on the atom plant, too. Had we not been in WW2, we would likely not have had the incentive to start the Manhattan project, allowing Hitler to complete it first. Think he wouldn't have used it to blackmail this country into surrendering? Sure he would.

Yes we do. Someone is always ready to challenge anyone who looks weak. That old commie bastard, Chairman Mao, said, "Political power comes out of the barrel of a gun" and he was right.

BS. He is an Islamist radical that wants to impose middle ages Islam on the world, save making all that money on 21st century oil, of course. He wants the entire world.

There is not, has never been, and never will be any sort of apeasment that works. if you do what he wants, he'll just want more. He can only be met with overwhelming force. That is the only thing that has a chance of working.

The nukes are a "doomsday machine" that cannot be used as long as any other country is willing to retaliate over it. Fire a nuke, get a hundred in return if Russia or China decides that the fallout from the one in Pakistan is worth going to war over.

Used to be, until we started letting the rest of the world build our cars, machine tools, etc. etc. for us. Clue - factory jobs are scarce, getting scarcer all the time, as are any sort of "work with your hands" type of labor. We don't build squat in comparison to what we used to be able to build, or should be able to build now to defend the country. Pittsburgh is no longer Steel City. Huge ore carriers no longer ply the great lakes like they once did to bring iron ore to Pittsburgh and environs. And now, our software development is being shipped overseas, too, so young people are not enrolling in computer science like they once did. In fact, its a derth of CS students in this country - why bother, when your job is going to India or Russia 3 years after you graduate, anyway? We're losing that knowledge, that know-how, and once gone, its going to be a devil of a time getting it back, if ever.

Once upon a time, maybe. Not now. Where's Grumman? Yeah, they exist - but not building new aircraft. McDonnel Douglas has been absorbed into Boeing. Lockheed is building space shuttle stuff, but what new aircraft? Maybe they could, after retooling...

This may be correct mainly because of... the Militia. Yeah, there are 50 million guns in private hands, and a staggering amount of ammunition, too. Of course, the USA does have a damn good Navy, Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps, because we are deployed all over hell's half acre. But change that policy, and there would be no incentive to build a military that big just to have it march back and forth on California beaches or Iowa corn fields. And, of course, this policy pretty much guarantees that any military conflict would occur here, instead of somewhere else in the world. That what you want? I didn't think so...
