On Sunday, 24 hours before the storm hit: As many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave, and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. The city arranged buses to take people to 10 last-resort shelters, including the Superdome.
By 5 p.m. EDT, Katrina's eye was about 150 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm was moving toward the northwest at nearly 13 mph and was expected to turn toward the north. A hurricane warning was in effect for the north-central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, La., to the Alabama-Florida line.
Despite the dire predictions, a group of residents in a poor neighborhood of central New Orleans sat on a porch with no car, no way out and, surprisingly, no fear.
"We're not evacuating," said Julie Paul, 57. "None of us have any place to go. We're counting on the Superdome. That's our lifesaver."
There is NO excuse to leave those people there to die. None. The buses could have just as easily taken them to Beaumont, TX as to the Superdome. It is a 4 hour drive. The majority of them could have been gotten out of the area long before the storm hit. The lack of effort on the part of our government to save lives is reminiscent of third world corruption.

THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T MOVE THEM ONLY 100 MILES AWAY, YOU IDIOT. YOU MOVE THEM 300 MILES AWAY FROM THE TRAJECTORY OF THE HURRICANE - A MERE 6 HOUR DRIVE WITH A 24 HOUR NOTICE. I KNOW PREDICTING THE PATH OF A HURRICANE IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE. THERE ARE LIMITATIONS TO THE VARIATIONS OF THE PATHS IT WILL TAKE. MOVE BEYOND THE LIMITATIONS.
Funny how there are NO reports of people dieing in their cars on the gridlocked highways. TRAFFIC DOES MOVE, ALBEIT SLOWLY. PEOPLE IMMOBILIZED IN THE PATH OF A HURRICANE DON'T EVER MOVE ANYWHERE BUT TO A GRAVE. APPARENTLY MOVING PEOPLE OUT OF THE PATH OF A HURRICANE WORKS. THE ONES WHO WERE ABLE TO GET ON THE GRIDLOCKED HIGHWAYS DURING THE 24 HOURS BEFORE THE STORM ARE ALIVE TO TELL ABOUT THE TRAFFIC JAMS.
And you are an defeatist idiot and apparently an apologist of the worst sort for our rotten to the core government that sits by and lets people die after absconding with their money the government said would be used to protect them.
