Could be. Depends how the technically inferior suspension implementation goes. The current car handles extremely well (the steering is another matter) but rides appallingly. The torsion beam setup in the new car will make it harder to meet the ride-handling compromise. They might sort the steering out, but most of the current crop of 200+bhp hatches have duff steering. I think the compromises of putting that much power through the front wheels are increasingly making anaesthetised steering inevitable. They've also said that they won't be increasing the power, so unless they do something about the weight it's going to be well off the pace.
I've thought about other hot-hatches, but I don't think any of them offer enough of anything I can't get from the Civic.
Took a 230 out for a spin at the weekend. I liked it. The character of the car is dominated by the engine, though, and if you don't like the engine you'll hate the car. Like the Civic, a Marmite car.

That would be the MX5 then! Actually, if it were not for the need for some vestige of practicality, I'd be looking at an Elise or a VX220 Turbo. The RX8 is about as far as we can go in terms of impracticality.
