Daytona came up with the following;:
Whilst on the face of it this sounds bad, I also did a similar thing without thinking about it for many years, roughly 11, though the dates-ages might be a tad out, with some mitigating circumstances. I suspect it is all too easily done and that there are many others doing it.
I started driving on the farm at about age 4, motorbikes, tractors, cars. Indeed any vehicle. I started racing cars at about 12, motorbikes at about 10 and always had some form of vehicle (mainly horse boxes) and driver to take me anywhere I wanted to whilst racing etc. When I was old enough to drive 'properly' I already had International racing licences for motorcycle and car racing and it simply never occurred to me, I was by this time independant of parents, that I had to do anything different to drive legally on the roads, so I did so. I simply bought a car and started driving it on the road, along with a Merc van and a motorbike or three. Everyone I knew had just kept saying "wait till you're 17 and you can drive on the roads" .... It never occurred to me I needed to take a test that was any different from what I had to do to keep my racing licences up to date and valid.
At all times 1 and for all vehicles I had insurance, tax etc all was absolutely legal, I thought, with all my vehicles, indeed company cars were also being driven ... ;)
It was only when I was thinking of marriage, at around age 28, that it was ascertained that I had never taken a road driving test and therefore had no legal road driving licence. SWMBO made sure that I soon got a licence.
I booked bike lessons and went for CBT, whereupon the instructor asked me to join the instructors !! A block booking of car lessons were also arranged and I took two, when the instructor said it wasn't worth having any more. The first lesson was getting me to position correctly on the road, the second was filling in the test booking forms, so we put in for the two tests on the same day. I pbutted both car and bike tests, first time, the same day some time later.
I've been driving, apparently legally, ever since. I'm now 46 ish ... ;)
1 Occasional 'test' runs with various non-road-legal racing machinery aside ... ;)
