I think I had that trick pulled on me in the 1980s. I was driving from Bishop's Stortford to The Peak District and my route took me through Mansfield. As I came off the A1 and headed towards Mansfield I was stopped by a line of coppers and they demanded to know a great deal about me and what I was doing-where I was going to. I pointed out that I was under no obligation to give them that information and that AFAIK there was no reason to stop me drivign down the road since they had already told me there was no problem such as an accident or emergency.

Then one of them pulled a long stretch of gobbledygooka nd said that if I tried to continue in that direction of to enter Mansfield by any other route I would be arrested. I had to turn around and go miles out of my way. The reason was that anyone they *suspected* may be a miner was being stopped from driving from Yorkshire into Derbyshire, since the Derbyshire miners were not playing King Arthur's stupid game.
