H.L. Mencken once observed that in a democracy the people get the government they deserve. So, tell us more about yourself, "norton" or "Hank" or whatever you call your sock.
Once upon a time in California, the rank and file of that state's Republican party (a "major" party in the minds of some) put a proposition on the statewide ballot that anyone asking for state government goodies (welfare, medical care, schooling, driver's license, you-name-it) must first show proof of legal residence in California (citizenship, green card, visa, etc.).
The sitting Republican governor at the time who was also running for re-election on that ballot, btw, got behind the measure and the voters pbutted it -- including a majority of California's Hispanic voters!
However, the other "major" party and its left-wing allies ran to the federal bench (the infamous Ninth Circuit) and blocked the state's implementation of the measure. That other party, Democrat, and its racialist lefty allies also continued its smear campaign against the Republicans, painting that measure with lies that called its backers "racist" and "anti-hispanic". The smear tactics succeeded in smashing Republicans down to a tiny minority of seats in the legislature and later electing Democrat candidate Gray "Blackout" Davis as governor.
Meanwhile, politicians across the country of both incumbent parties saw what had happened in California as a result of the Republicans trying to put an end to the free-money-for-illegals ripoff. This included a former baseball club owner in Texas who had ambitions of being governor.
Very true. If you ever voted Democrat in your life, consider the taxes you pay to finance such a boondoggle your penance. And for those of us who never were so greedy as to covet our neighbor's goods, well, it's a fallen world we live in. Next election, work harder to elect honest people, not Democrats.
