When the front of the "convoy" brakes the one behind takes at least a moment of reaction time, as does the one behind that and so on... Eventually one will not be able to stop in time. It will not just hit the truck in front, but it will more likely jack-knife taking out three lanes as the cars and vans plough into the fireball.

And how does this bare out when the lorry is tail gating a car. I've seen cars tailgated in a 40 road works with Average speed cameras. What is the point. We all know about keeping momentum for getting up the next hill, but in reality the few MPH more gains nothing over a journey. So they might have to change a few gears, hardly a big deal when they are on a motorway. Around town they are changing gears continuously.
And I should bloody hope so too. HGV drivers are supposed to be the best drivers on the road (coughs sarcastically), they have a huge responsibility because of the devastating destruction a truck can cause.
