I can drive extremely fast. Not as fast as when I used to have a RACMSA licence but still quick enough to scare the bejesus out of alot of people. I own one car designed to go down roads extremely quickly with a big f*** off engine, uprated suspension and brakes and a LSD.
One road in particular, I can safely go down at 100MPH despite it being a minor A road as I know it very well having at one point gone down it 4 times a day. Average speed for Joe Normal is around 45-50MPH on this road. So what happens when I'm driving down it at a speed I deem to be safe and I round a corner to come across Joe Normal?
I now expect you to harp on about safe stopping distances, fast as the distance you can see, bollox, bollox, etc. Fact is though that a person when driving down the road at excessive speed still considers what they're doing to be safe. And that they'll stop in time. All fo the safe distance bollox goes completely out of the window. Its:
1) Am I going at the speed I want? 2) Do I feel safe doing it?
And the answer to both is inevitably yes. But unless they've had training to drive at those speeds, they're not as safe as they think they are.
