Every driver is facing different circumstances. I know that my tyres are correctly inflated and have 6mm tread at the front, 8mm rear. I braking or lateral acceleration. In many circumstances my appropriate speed might be higher than that of a small hatchback on skinny tyres, in others, say standing water, it will be much lower due to aquaplaning risk.

Different conclusions may be equally right.

There is a wide range of driving skill on the road. The less send will usually choose a lower speed, especially if there is no targetonastick to aim for...

Yes, they will mostly tend to drive slower than they safely could since they will have no interest if pushing either their own or their vehicles limits.

"Boy Racers" are supposedly ignoring the limits anyway, so no change there.

Keen drivers will not be inconvenienced by looking out for additional, artificial hazards nor need they waste time glancing at their speedos.

Everyone wins.

I've certainly not seen any cogent defence of speed limits.
