Alistair J Murray Rob Sorry but that is complete rubbish. The only reason for a speedometer in a car is because there are limits, yet I can positively guarantee to you that I could safely drive my car for the rest of my life if the speedometer was removed - thus preventing me from knowing if I was over the limit or not. Your lack of faith in the judgement of the majority of drivers is very disappointing. I do not support the 'no limits' idea btw, Why do you support speed limits when you'd be happy without a speedo?
I cannot agree that we could function properly without limits, even after considering everything you have said in this thread. For the most part Kev is right, there are some people that will decide to drive around at ridiculous speeds, I just don't agree that the majority would. They don't do it now - I dispute the claim that it's the limits that prevent them, I say it's because they choose not to drive at an unsafe speed.
I would be happy without a speedo because I don't need to know my speed to drive safely and considerately.
I think the speedo watching encouraged by the precision enforcements of entirely arbitrary limits is dangerous. ...far more dangerous than any small benefit limits might offer.
Dangerous is an exaggeration, but it's an extra hazard that we could do without. I usually only need to repeatedly look at mine in an unnatural 30 zone in any case.
