No, it isn't beside the point. I was very proud of no points in 1.5 million miles. I was proud to be a driver who took pride in being safe. I have to admit to feeling damm peeed off at getting 3 points on my clean license - oh, I made the error all right, but not a dangerous one. A traffic officer would not have even glanced at me in those circumstances, but some snotty nosed creep looked at the photo of my car at 1am a little over the limit in open countryside and thought, "yeh, lets have the bugger".
Whats the point in alienating so many people when the returns on nabbing them are so small?
The minority will be stupid regardless of the rules out there. There has to be some sense shown here, and not the carpet planting technique we are seeing at the moment.
Over enforcing them just makes a lot of the population lose respect for the rules.
Ok, so a particular road should be, or indeed USED to be 40mph, but is now 30mph - you then start booking people for doing 36 on it!
I think that is complete bollocks!
I tell you what you point of view reminds me of - children requiring dirt and girms to keep healthy. If they don't get the girms while developing, they start getting mystery illnesses because their immune systems have never been introduced to bacteria. Being TOO clean is actually bad for them - I believe the same dumbing down of driving is making drivers immune to the sense of danger. Drivers are turning over safety to cameras vans and airbags.
I think it is going too far.
