The vast majority of drivers didn't do 90mph in 30 limits or 55mph in crowded town centers either.
I got my first car in 1979, a ford Capri. I owned it for two years and in that time I was stopped seven times by Police officers. four of those stops were just me and three of them were pulling random cars off the road at checkpoints.
None of the stops were speed related but tended to be along the lines of "why are you out at this time of night?" or "several capris have been stolen recently, can you prove this is yours?". I was not a chav, did not dress strange and my cars have never been modded in any way whatsoever.
One day I was driving in the country with my girlfreind and we decided to park up and go for a walk. When we got back to the car we decided to clean it - car proud! A police car stopped in the middle of nowhere to ask what we were up to!
In the past 20 years I have never been stopped by an officer for any reason, seen driving standards fall, road rage increase and several million people done for a few mph over the limit. The respect for the police has fallen to an all time low as well.
