My son demonstrates L test failings
MrBitsy composed the following;: And? Or was this at night? Wet and Dull doesn't necessarily mean anything more than sidelights, indeed any lights, are needed. You mean...

Motoring "offences" you'd like people to hang for
There are quite a few "bad indicating" at roundabouts that I'd like to see people done for...

Are you advoctaing risky overtakes on motorways?

No... all I meant was don't drive three abreast. It doesn't mean wait until there's no traffic in lane 3. Unless traffic is queuing, I don't find this to be an issue at all. If traffic is queuing, the sideswipe accident risk is lower, but the risk of a shunt is higher so you need space in front-behind.

I've only ever needed to take avoiding action a handful of times - I was glad I knew I had somewhere to go when it did happen.

Only last week I saw a car get 'collected' by a truck which pulled into Lane 3 to avoid hitting another vehicle in Lane 2. The car driver knew it was going to hit him and despite locking up the brakes he didn't clear the back of the truck in time. If only he'd had another lane to go to... :-

I'll try an ASCII illustration.

If it's like this: (Y = You, X = Other vehicle)

X X Y

Wait until it's like this:

X X Y

Generally you're only talking a couple of seconds. You just need a gap big enough to use as an escape.

The reality might, of course, be more like:

My son demonstrates L test failings
My son pbutted his test first time after 28 lessons. He puchased his first car, a Vauxhall Corsa, 2 days ago. He picked the car up in Coventry and...

X X X X X X X Y X X X X X X X X X X X

Even on the busy road above, it's not overly difficult to avoid driving three abreast.

I admit I don't always follow my own advice... but I do accelerate as quickly as possible to minimise the exposure time. In this instance, I'd floor it to get past the vehicles in L2 as quickly as possible. I don't hold anybody up doing this.

HVB.
