But I just find that the roads are becoming more hostile places.

I'm not so OTT as you might think.

The fact remains that if you're driving at a fairly normal average cruising speed, at a fairly constant pace, and a car approaches, then shadows you, then it does stand to reason that you'd question why.

You and another posted have commented that when driving at high-ish speeds, you appreciate some degree of camarederie. But clearly, people won't universally infer the meaning or point of it.

And more instances of road-rage get reported, and car-jacking and other related crimes seems on the increase. How's the sole driver who's the subject of this behaviour supposed to know when it's one or the other?

Not in particular. I did used to post with my real name, but too many kooks spoil the broth ;-)

Fair comment - they are more open and less threatening than similar behvaiour in built-up or isolated roads - where other options aren't available.

This is what I suggested I'd likely do.

I don't perceive myself as nervous or paranoid - I would just questioned being the subject of this, like anything else. Given one more distraction and being unsure of the motivation, why would I want it to continue? I can get some of the points you make about being the "tailer" in this scenario, but I'm not sure I get what's in it for the tailee.

On a single lane road you could more readily explain it away - they've caught you up, and may have no easy way of getting past - the conditions may not avail an easy overtake, or they may be overtake-phobic ;-)

Either way, though, and after a bit, I'd probably want to put some space in between.
