My guess is that the guardrail did what it was supposed to do. The design was most likely flawed. Several ways a vehicle can get on top of a guard rail. Most common is that the guard rail does not begin soon enough. Next most common is that there is a turn down or flare which will guide offending vehicles up onto or behind the guard rail.

Doug Doug, you are correct. The guardrails should be there to protect the errant drivers. I don't know the evolution of the existing guard rails. But...

For an off the street citizen to go up against the guardrail design is a losing cause, in my opinion. Let the John Lansfords of this world fight that battle. But the John Lansfords do need our support to battle the forces of evil known as politcians. The politicians will have press releases praising the results of this crash in terms of not having to pay social securtiy for the driver or hospital expenses of the two innocent victims. :-P

Think about this. Some road people think guard rails are to protect the road. There is a culvert, or abutment that the road designer is protecting. What does it take to get into the mind of the designer? Is the intent to protect the road, or the people driving on that road?
