I disagree. Posted speed limits imply that this is the speed that someone minimaly qualified for a driver's license CAN safely drive. Otherwise, how does a driver get guidance for what's a safe speed for the road? The sign is not saying "65 limit for the best drivers. All others find out for yourself."
Otherwise, why not find the top speed the best driver is capable of driving and setting the speed limit for that, with the expectation that all other drivers will find the speed that's safe for them?
And the 85th percentile speed may very well be a speed that is driveable by drivers who meet minimum qualification for a license, even if they are not comfortable driving that fast.
I absolutely understand it
Lots of accidents and rest, especially among and caused by teenagers who don't understand their limitation. I would wager that 85 miles per hour is significantly above the 85th percentile for that road. I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to the 100th percentile.
Well you are advocating letting people go as fast as they want if you set the speed limits at the level that people who drive the fastest can go. But I agree with you. I don't think anyone (well maybe some here who have called for no speed limits) IS advocating that. And that's the point I'm trying to make, that:
1) Speed LIMITS, not mimimums, limits have to be set at levels that are reasonably safe for everyone with a license, even if they don't like driving that fast. 2) No one is above the law and no one should violate a law simply because they don't like it or find it convenient. Because as soon as you say that's okay, you ARE advocating that drivers drive as fast as they want. Get it?
But that fact that so many people here accept the idea that they can appropriately be limited to driving the 85th percentile is rebutturing. I buttume that they would not exceed that limit if it were so set.
