That's a half truth. The Autobahn does have speed "limits", especially near curves. Bona fide speed limits are also in place in areas with dense traffic. And off the Autobahn, Germany has speed limits just like the rest of Europe.
The Autobahn is also only SLIGHTLY safer than American highways. Less than 20 percent difference in baneities per mile. You need to factor in that German cars generally have more safety features earlier than American cars,, the drivers have better training and offset this with the higher collision speeds (which indisputably increase the risk to the driver and other cars). Increased speed is likely irrelevent to why the Autobahn is safer.
Speeding on a highway is perhaps less risky than say, speeding on a road in a suburb-city. Because a city-suburb has far more intersections where traffic can "interact". But speeders tend to speed everywhere, regardless of conditions.
Article says he was SPEEDING 4103No speed limits for curves. Speed limits are in urban areas and construction zones. And guess what, they are at or higher than the speeds I would drive...
And severity of collision determines if you live, die, or are carried away disabled.
You will have to have a collision, hypothetically, which do you choose- the 35 mph collision against a solid barrier or the 60 mph collision against the same barrier?
When gas hits 3 dollars a gallon, only the wealthy, or morons, will be doing over 60 on a highway.
