I booked my wife's Merc A Clbutt in for a regular service yesterday. The man from the main dealer quoted me £360 for the more extensive of the two services that this car alternates between. He rang back a few minutes later and apologised for forgetting that due the age-mileage the car also needs new spark plugs. No problem I tell him, four plugs can't be more than £20, even at main dealer prices. Wrong he said, £90 because the plugs have their own coil each and that has to be changed too. I can't wait for the final bill!
However, not only do I have no choice if I want to keep the 30 year warranty going, but also there is no Haynes manual available for me to do it myself. This seems to be a common problem with newer cars. My wife's previous car was a Hyundai Atoz and there was no Haynes manual available for that either, nor could the Hyundai dealer sell me one.
At least my Shogun has a Haynes manual, and I used that last week to help me with changing the timing belt. Saved quite a lot over even a normal garage by DIYing it. But that is going to be wasted by having to send the Merc to the dealer. I'm sticking with my old Shogun for as long as I can I think.
