Steve Firth no it didn't. you don't realise that I knew that WinCE was a poo OS back then (and still is) but hasn't been in use for donkeys years...

No, but I can see how you keep trying to push it in that direction. As I mentioned earlier, I was the author of a report on flawed design decisions made when PocketPC phones or WinCE devices as they then were first appeared for review. I can see that the point made went over your head.

Umm no, you'd be just like the vast majority of skiers. It was ironic because said journo had pushed PocketPC phones hard in Italy, oblivious to the basic flaws in their design. I understand that nowadays he uses a bog standard phone. FWIW, the same journalist also had a Mercedes estate car which used embedded WinCE for the driver displays and in-car telephony. That car crashed (in the computer sense) on the A1 autostrada because of a WinCE bug, and had to be "rebooted" before it would function again.

Steve Firth which one is it ? whaddayagot ? or is this another brimstone situation ? how strange. I have 2 WM5 devices and neither of...

This is where M$ beliefs that you can pile flaky applications on top of flaky OS takes us - to real world devices that don't work as well as hard wired or even slightly better conceived devices.

On 03 Oct 2006 14:35:23 GMT, Adrian this computer. I use it regularly, mostly for in-car navigation. Compared to my 1993 Newton Message Pad, it's a dog...

? Are you suffering from echolalia?

How odd, my old Nokia 6310i was capable of working at the top of a mountain for a week or so without power.

Landlines work quite happily in the absence of mains power, unless the user has been stupid enough to replace all the handsets with DECT units or has gone to VoIP. I suggest that you don't have your thinking head on at present, Wurzel.

And yet it's notified as a known bug that Windows Mobile will crash at midnight, flattening the battery if one forgets to close down applications.

No, I simply don't have my head up my bum. If you like Windows Mobile and can get on with it, fine. But don't try to pretend that it's as robust a solution as the alternatives. It simply is not, it's TAPI on top of an OS and both have problems. No other telephone (with the possible exception of the upcoming Linux phones) works in that arse about face manner.
