Bikes! 2219It surprises me not that California would allow these things. This is probably why many bicyclists and motorcyclists feel that it is allowed elsewhere. I have never considered that the acceptability of a particular action...
Just like it means that bicyclists aren't to be riding in the gutter practically scraping pedals on the curb. Thanks for making that clear.
It's perfectly legal to use the left lane to pbutt. A bicycle is no exception to this.
On my way home from work, I was turning left on to a road. Across the road and to my left a driver was turning right on to it to go the same direction. He saw me and accelerated to prevent me from getting by him. NP, since he accelerated. Well then, a block later he forgot about me.

He's at the back of a queue for a light where we will both be turning right. The light goes green and he's just sitting there. There's a 100 feet or more of empty lane in front of him. I change to the left lane, pbutt him, change back to the right when he notices he's standing still and traffic is taking off. I go through the turn, but I make the immidate left afterwards. I'm in the right lane and I look back and he is rounding the turn widely and slothily into the left lane. I signal my lane change and change lanes, then enter the left turn lane.
Then the guy comes screaming up along side of me, hits the brakes and is screaming and yelling obsensities at me. I just flip him off and say if you don't want to be pbutted, you have to move faster than a bicycle. He yells some more obsensities and I flip him off again. He yells he'll 'beat me up' or some such. I give him the 'bring it on' hand signal as he mashes the accelerator followed by mashing the brakes to avoid rear ending the car that had been front of me, which was now in the queue at the third light. I simply made my left. Where I found a semi delaying me, which I also then pbutted.
Bikes! 2218You wrote on the left, and that's it, expecting me to be a mind reader. And he pbutted on the left. I pbutted stoped cars on...

And that was just part of the ride home from work...
Later in that ride I used the left lane to pbutt a long queue of cars that were turning right while I was going straight. All perfectly legal. You see, bicycles are only restricted to the right lane when moving slower than the normal speed of traffic and not pbutting. I was moving the normal speed of traffic (catching up to cars in front of me) for those pieces of road and pbutting.
There was also ride back from the body shop where I dropped off the mustang and the ride to work as well, but they weren't as interesting from a traffic standpoint.
