But what the public forgets is they hate tax rises but a large proportion of the public drive cars. Even those that don't rely on people who *do*, and on other road transport. They'll think "Ha, that's foiled the millionaires in their Rolls Royces", as they troop down to the post office to pay for their 2k tax disk, and not even think about it.
All they're doing is moving the tax to somewhere you can't avoid paying for it, unless you're a hermit, make everything yourself, and cut yourself off from society.
The knock on effect of putting up VED to £2k a year will have 1 of 2 effects..
1) They give everyone a 2k payrise (those companies that can afford it). The price of products goes up. 2) They say sod it, and move away from the UK, or close the company because the workers can't afford to drive in any more.
FWIW, the "New money is needed". What happened to the tens of billions of pounds a year that's already being siphoned off through extra taxes? I'd rather see it spent more efficiently. All I see for it is filthy hospitals (yes, from personal experience) and ever bigger holes in the road. Oh, and a couple of wars no-one wanted.
