C'mon America, make room for bicycles 1841Brrrr... I'll bet its no fun, tho, and much less preferable than a good car with a heater set to "creamate". It's evening here - 6:48 PM, and the heat-humidity could be freeze...
i think it's a fair point... people put their minds on cruise control on those rural or semi-rural highways... they're cruising along at 65 without ever dreaming that someone may have to turn in front of them and that they may need to A) slow and pbutt them on the shoulder or B) (shudder) STOP if there's no room to pbutt. not only that, the high rate of speed on those highways, around 65-75 makes for much shorter stopping distances than in the city where you're more likely to be doing 25-50. much worse accidents too.
OP makes a good point in that what makes for really BAD accidents is when the driver behind you "alertly" swings around you as you wait to make your left turn, but the driver behind him slams into you because he might not have seen *any* brake lights. this can easily happen if the guy following you was driving a large SUV that was blocking the driver's view behind him and the SUV driver just swung around you without braking.
this not an *excuse* for people rear-ending people on these roads, just an explanation of why i can understand the OP's fear of what morons might do to him if he obeys traffic laws and drives prudently!

there's little comfort in "but hey i was in the right" when some idiot totals your car. lots of pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers die while being perfectly within right-of-way and walking-pedaling-driving according to all the rules.
