Breakdown cover 1062In an earlier contribution to this discussion, A lot of insurance companies sell breakdown cover as an optional extra with their policies...
Is it just me, or is anyone else slightly suspicious of companies who use local contractors?
Look at it this way.
The last time I called the AA out it was about 9pm, in the middle of nowhere, snowing and my alternator had failed. The AA guy managed to source an alternator from 10 miles away (taking me along for the ride to pay for it) and then laid in the snow for a good half hour fitting it. I paid the cost of the alternator.
If I had been in Green Flag etc. etc., they would have called the local garage with a recovery truck. The mechanic would probably have been at home on call out, or at the very least in a nice warm office watching TV. If he fixes it there and then, he gets paid once (by Green Flag). If he recovers it to his own garage, he gets paid by Green Flag, charges me labour costs for fixing it the next day, and gets back home a lot quicker.
Dangerous Roads" 1063Mike G But if you take the statistical probability of having an accident on a given piece of road and then provide addition penalties like sheer drops with no defensive crash barriers then...
Sorry for being cynical, but it makes no difference to the AA-RAC guy whether he fixes or recovers - it's just a night's work. Whereas the Green Flag guy can make more money for his company and go home sooner by *not* fixing the car, if it looks even remotely difficult or if parts are difficult to source.
Maybe I'm just a sceptic though???
