Well most European manufacturers buid perfectly good cars which weigh about a ton 2200lbs and are capable of 45mpgUK with petrol engines and around 55mpg with diesel engines. My Panda carries four in comfort and has more than adequate performance and indeed will cruise in excess of 90mph and averages around 60mpgUK in my hands but is capable of 70mpgUK.
If US domestic manufacturers cannot provide the vehicles you need, demand European or Korean or Japanese economy cars which can. They are available now if you want them. I suspect Americans will take some weaning from the gas guzzlers they are used to. The possibility of fuel at $6-8 per gallon would be very persuasive I believe. There's more profit in the SUV's though so a sudden move to smaller cars in America would surely finish GM and Ford off while European and Eastern built cars would thrive. Ironically both Ford and GM have plenty of economy models available but they are not built in America and probably could not be built there and make a profit. To get the price right, even Fiat do not build their economy Panda in Italy. It is outsourced to Poland. Even the latest technology engine which is supplied to GM and Suzuki is built in Poland. This is why it is such outstanding value for money and still makes money for Fiat.
