It's about 15-20 cents more per gallon here in Florida. And Florida has a high diesel tax, too.
OTOH, I have friends who can make biodiesel from waste cooking oil and sell it to me for $2.10 per gallon. I've always been a biodiesel advocate, so I'd be willing to pay more for the diesel car just to run biodiesel. But it's nice to know the fuel isn't too expensive.

Some gbutters require more than 87 octane too. My brother rides around in his Volvo 240 with 87 octane and he wonders why he only gets 19 mpg. It's the octane, I try and tell him- it says right in the manual "premimu". You get what you pay for.
The real reason diesel gets in a pinch so much is because the US hasn't built any refineries in 27 years. Folks on the west coast esp. are hurting because a refinery in Alberta had a problem a few months ago. Also California has mandates for "boutique fuels", hurting its supplies. Right now the US is a net importer of diesel fuel- we don't make enough of it to meet demand, and what little of the good stuff we do make often gets exported to Europe.
Compared to what I was driving around in, an 83 Ford Crown Victoria, 40 miles per gallon is a real boost, diesel or not. The Crown Victoria probably only got 17 miles per gallon.
