Where exactly in North London are you heading?

You may well find that going M25-M40-A40-A406 is the lesser of all the other evils. Seriously.
Or you could try just heading in on the A4, and cutting up to the A40 Westway (either through Chiswick-Shepherd's Bush, or the A3220, or by going over the Hammersmith flyover, next left, around the back of Olympia, picking up Holland Road just before the Holland Park Roundabout, then up to the A40 from there) and head out from Marylebone Road.
Or even from Southampton (that's where you're from, isn't it?) to Winchester on the M3, then take the A31-A3 route (*much* quieter overall than the M3 route, and a much more pleasant drive), through Wandsworth, towards Battersea, left towards the Heliport, follow the road up to Albert bridge (*much* less traffic than Battersea bridge due to the width restriction), up to Lambeth Bridge, cut through to Waterloo Bridge, under the Strand underpbutt, out to Camden, and then you're in a pretty good position to access a lot of North London.
But if it's NW London, which it may well be, given that you go on the A406, I'd still say that most of the time M25-M40-A40 to Hanger Lane is as good or as bad a way as any other.
