Can satnav negotiate Whitehall maze 774and if that map reader is the driver as well, thats even more dangerous. A least with sat nav you know you can ignore the turning and you'll be routed back, wereas...
Evading Specs 775It was mentioned on the Wright Stuff this morning as one of the headlines (unchallenged) to lots of laughter...

Yeas, handy that. "Turn left in 100 yards" - "Err, didn't we just pbutt that one?".
They can be downright dangerous. I sent a note to the 'risks' mailing list a while back - some months ago my son was being driven in London along the north bank east towards Tower Bridge. The destination was south of the river. GPS said "turn right" so the driver did. Unfortunately, there's a one-way system there (you turn left and drive round the block) - and they nearly hit a car coming the other way.
So I'd say it's in unfamiliar places that they become most dangerous; and you don't need them in the familiar ones.
That said, I used a gps72 a couple of weeks ago pre-programmed with a trip to peterborough (no maps - it's intended for walking primarily) solely as backup in case we had problems. The GPS was correct all the way - but the road signs on the p'boro approach were so clear and also so badly adrift that we missed two turnings on major roads. You can't win :-(
