and if that map reader is the driver as well, thats even more dangerous. A least with sat nav you know you can ignore the turning and you'll be routed back, wereas with maps, I'm sure we've all the the experience of getting nearby and then getting horribly lost.

After you have compared sat nav with the reality of drivers using rough maps on scraps of paper or out of date atlases, or a list of road turnings, or a bumbling navigaror say 'turn left, no that left this one oh you missed it, oh i meant right anyway", or reading directions as they go along, what would you conclusion be? Sometimes the screen is very helpful (its not always clear what counts as a turn off a rbout for example), a quick glance can be safer than dithering, looking at a map, or pulling over at a dangerous place, again, we have all seen this behaviour.

It strikes me as foolish to compare behaviour driving with a sat nav, to some mythical perfect behaviour with a perfect navigator or road knowledge, that never occurs in reality.
