I have been known for my "anti-speed camera" postings, this does not mean that I think speeding is good, just that many situations and levels where speeding is enforced are wrong. From the small amount of evidence available here, the driver was completely out of order and should be locked up for a long time. It is just such a shame that speeding has become so controversial due to inappropriately low limits and over-enforcement. If limits were set and enforced sensibly, cameras would be welcomed by all, apart from only the idiots and boy racers, and this might mean there would be more of them, and they would actually acheive an improvement in road safety instead of just peeing everyone off (apart from the benefactors). Maybe, this wouldn't have happened if speeding policy was more sensibly managed.

I am considered to be a very fast driver, but I have experienced hitting a child in a built up area, in my early driving days when I was a motorcyclist. But I was not speeding at the time because I had adjusted my speed because the area was residential with obscured turnings. But half a mile earlier I was probably doing 45 in a 30 where nothing possibly could have happened. The kid (about 5) was pedaling flat out down a hill unsupervised and went straight across the main road. I considered myself fortunate that I came off worse than he did, I dumped the bike and slid along the road a bit, I just clipped him and knocked him off his bike but he was unhurt.

Where cameras are set up in areas like this, they are set up in the places similar to where I would have been doing 45, rather than where it is really improtant, like where my accident occured.

I will continue to argue for a sensible approach to speed and for some attention to be payed to the appalling standards of driving which are demonstrated by an alarming proportion of drivers.
