This is a very tricky area, as the notion of doing things unconsciously is a bit of a misnomer. People get into very slack habits and don't pay as much attention to things as they should - things happening unconsciously is a bit of an excuse to be honest. In fact, doing something 'unconsciously' is probably one of the best ways to get done for driving without due care and attention. I'm not trying to deny them that chance, just to give other road users the chance to be as visible as bikes. If a bike is infront of me, and going slower and I don't see it, their headlight is going to be neither use nor ornament if I fail to notice him and hit him (DWDCA). Whoever told you this did you a disservice. To be blunt it's a horse-poo excuse for the thick and-or lazy.
I know none of it is deliberate, but not paying attention is, well, it's just rude above anything else! ;-)
