I regularly drive to Bristol from the Lakes, a distance of 305 miles, the tank on the car is 13 gallons enough for the round trip but diesel is about 5p a litre cheaper in Brislington Tesco than anywhere in the Lakes, so it makes sense to fill up there. You're of course right, it easier to fill up using a fuel pump that a calculator. However having done the trips every few months for over 25 years I have a good idea when I'm going to get a clear run through Manchester and Birmingham the two trouble spots. I always brim the tank and carry a calculator because excess fuel consumption can point up a problem later on. And I wasn't lying about my Grannies shopping cart, It turns in 74mpg at a steady 60 and 60 at a steady 70. Previous cars have done worse 23 from a mark3 Cortina, 25 from a VW Transporter van but that dropped to 17 around town, Beetles regularly in the low 30s,a polo 45, and a Sunny about 42 but all these were fag packet calculations. The only way you're going to see the light is if you actually do the same as I do. When you have, I'll accept your apology with grace. -- Clive
