OT: Going To Movies
Dan J.S. This is interesting. I always go to movies as much as possilble because I like the environment, and out of habit, since I've been doing it...

Yes they do - film is far superior to even high definition TV. 35 mm still photography can still blow away even the high-end digital cameras, too. I know, 'cuz I have one. Kodak used to put a mural 100 feet long (I think it was) made from a 35 mm slide onto the walls of Grand Central Station, and the resolution was fantastic. You're not going to get that with any digital, presently.

Again, the sound is better. You can't set up a decent bbutt note in a house-sized room like you can the cavern that is the theater auditorium. The dymanic range of the sound for a theater is much higher simply because you can't play your TV that loud without peeing off everyone else in the house, and maybe the neighbors if you live in an apartment. Plus, you don't have the sound insulation at home, nor likely the quiet environment of the movies to keep the outside noises from coming in and distracting you from the movie.

Not with TV images, and not usually with the size of the speakers you're dealing with at home, nor the size of the room, nor the sound insulation of the room.

My experience is that you do - those big amps aren't generally cheap at all, although its been years since I bought one, so maybe the prices have come down. I've got a 120 W channel stereo system with large speakers that weigh 95 lbs apiece, and this stuff was expensive, and still doesn't equal the theater experience for the several reasons enumerated above, let alone my puny 19" screen. I don't have room for a much bigger screen in that room, either, and there's too much light coming into the room from outside, and it wouldn't be all that easy to get rid of it either.

CDs don't have clicks and pops - my vinyl, that has always been played with about 1 gram of tracking force, still has that, anyway. No way around it after a few playings.

No "video" in my theater - its all real film.

Not at all noticable, tho. Sounds great most of the time, unless they're really having a breakdown.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't, and maybe the guy doesn't have time to dig it out of the glovebox. Yep...

That are 6 months out of date, mostly, and that people you talk to have to wrack their memories from seeing it 6 months ago in the theater to be able to talk to you about it.

DTS would be fine, in a proper room, without a lot of outside noise coming in (never mind the people with you in the room that think that, just because you're in the house, its perfectly fine to start blabbing during the showing...)
