Driving in ItalyWell, having just spent a week in Italy, driving in Rome and out in the country, I thought I'd report back on things I noticed... - The roads are terrible. Only toll routes...
temperature. working I components, etc.).
My (very approximate) 30 minute warm up time for the oil is from information I read long ago, and the situation may be different with modern machinery.
I appreciate that the oil will be heated by its contact with the underside of piston crowns, and the heat from the pistons will be conducted down the connecting rods and into the crankshaft. There is however a fair amount of mbutt in these bottom end component that will take some time to heat up fully. Also the oil is being thrown against the inside of the crankcase and sump (plus gearbox casing etc. on a FWD car) which are further mbuttes of metal all needing to heat up. These casings are also exposed to a blast of cold air on their outer surfaces, especially at this time of year, all of which delays the attainment of full working temperature for the complete engine.
I know 30 minutes sounds like a long time, but it might not be far off the right answer.
Anyhow, our Peugeot 406 HDi has an oil temperature gauge, so I'll try to note what happens early tomorrow morning on my 60 mile trip to Wetherby. I might be back here feeling very embarrbutted as I tell you that it warmed up fully in about 10 minutes! :-)
Best wishes all, Dave.
Cutting Up Why 1670on about ...lightweight... Of course you do... but when you're causing what sounds like a regular obstruction to others which you could actually avoid doing, don't moan...
