Here's is an interesting experiment that you could try. Find a quiet road with multiple lanes in your direction, and do a slightly slow speed (eg. 10mph less than the speed limit) along it. How many people will cut in front of you missing you by just a few inches?
The answer seems to be pretty high. There is a road like this that I sometimes drive along with a 50mph limit, but I rarely do more than 40mph because it's a steep hill. The road is usually very empty, and even a lorry would be capable of overtaking safely. However, most people tend to tailgate me, pbutt me, and then cut in VERY close, as if was inconsiderate or something.
Cutting Up Why 1667Mike G presented the following explanation : There are several errors I try to make obvious, to those making the error. Amongst them.... 1. The right turn...
The same kind of thing can happen on the motorway too, even with two other lanes empty. This happened to me last week. I was doing a constant 60mph (low power car etc.) in lane 1, and had been for a long time. Some idiot decided to overtake me right on the junction where he wanted to leave the motorway. He only just missed me, and didn't even signal. I had never changed my speed until I had to brake when he cut in front of me.
WHY???
