Tim McNamara Scott is fairly level-headed - it strikes me as odd that he is not completely familiar with the traffic laws in his own state. In any case, plenty of otherwise level...

You're overreaching here and perhaps you should read the laws for yourself. You can find them via Google for almost any state. Basically, the laws are similar in most states- cyclists are to ride to the right side of the road, but can take the entire lane if needed for their safety.

An example would be a section of shoulder covered in broken glbutt from the vodka bottle someone thought was inadvisable to keep in their car. The cyclist can take the lane because it's unsafe to ride through broken glbutt. Poor road conditions such as potholes can also occasion the same type of thing. Another situation might be going through a construction zone where the road is too narrow for drivers to safely pbutt the cyclist. One the safety issue is no longer a problem, the cyclist should go back to riding to the right side of the road.

Most drivers don't know the rules of the road as regards the rights of cyclists and other non-motorized road users, nor do they understand how their roads are funded, and they make silly buttumptions about cyclists and other non-motorized road users as well. Cyclists, on the other hand, are normally also drivers as well and do understand that side of the coin. For example, I ride my bike 6,000 to 7,000 miles a year and drive my car 15,000 to 18,000 miles a year- not an unusual combination. I do enough of both to know that there are a lot of idiots behind the wheel and a lot of idiots on bikes, and the percentage seems to be about the same. Whatever other natural resources may be diminishing, stupidity is abundant.

As a rule, the only significant negative interactions I have with drivers tend to be with extreme right-wingers (who don't seem to understand conservatism very well, or they wouldn't be trying to tell me what to do), teenaged boys, people under the influence, and people talking on cell phones while driving- or some combination of the above.

Scott en Aztl‡n along. It's no solution - it's capitulation. I enjoyed biking to work - it was close by, and since the place to park...

As far as a "Critical Mbuttesque" thing goes, that's nonsense. I have a right to use the roads whether I am in my car or on my bike, I use the roads regularly, and I don't have to "make a point" about my rights other than exercising them. At least while I'm on my bike. Newsgroups are a much better place to actually talk about rights.

So, this troll seems to be well-fed. Combining rec.bicycles* and rec.autos* seems to be a winning combination, don't you think? The OP chose fertile ground again.
