Many years ago I lived in a city neighborhood where sirens were a constant noise. There were almost always sirens. It was just part of the background noise living there, like the 'L'. 2 hosipitals, a police station, a firehouse I never found... Sirens echoing off buildings...
I'm on the street in front of the highrise I live in. parked cars on either side. I signal a left turn into the driveway. I am turning left as a siren becomes clearly audible from the backround noise. Before I can figure out where it's coming from the rear of my car is between parked cars as I enter the driveway and ambluence is flying up the wrong side of the street. I had not checked my left side mirror before making the turn... it just isn't part of the procedure to make a left turn in a car. And I am probably one of the most apt people do it since it is something commonplace on a bicycle, as people will pbutt you on the left when you're making a left turn on the wrong side of the road. I've had it happen many times while bicycling. But in all my years of driving, that's the only time it's happened.
As far as the center mirror is concerned, in the '73 it's biased to the right because there is no right side mirror. Also, at the speed the ambluence was moving and how close the end of the block was, maybe it came out of one of the driveways, it was just wasn't there in the last mirror check made before turning.
