Drinking & driving 1599

for so I You

OK, it is not so much a matter of *your* doubts Ian, perhaps more a question of doubts in general. The only way to decide whether or not drinking is a problem in a particular case would be to carry out some kind of test, but this is hardly a practical proposition for each instance where somebody wants to drink and then be doing some driving.

What we currently have is a legal limit, which I would retain until such time as I become convinced there is a better answer. I can not see that a zero limit - which some people advocate - is necessary or workable. At first glance it seems very clear cut and simple, but apparently there are ways in which one could be above a zero limit without drinking alcohol at all. I believe this can arise from eating certain foods or taking medication. This is not something I profess to understand, but it appears the zero limit idea is a non-runner.

What we seem to have had for some time now is a system that has attempted to take away drivers' freedom to use...

My preference is instinctively to support a policy of education, in relation to drink and driving, and indeed all other aspects of our use of motor vehicles. However, we seem to live in an age of individualism, where everybody wants to do their own thing, without even *thinking* about the effect on other people, let alone being willing to make adjustments to protect others' interests. The education would therefore not be easy, and it would not work with everybody, but I like to think there is more that we could do to make such a policy at least reasonably effective.

completely Ah, the old reactions business again. May I refer you to another post of mine on this topic. Try to drive so...

You may feel that *I'm* not open to the idea of being educated, which is really not the case. Perhaps I have been given a fairly hard time by some of you in this topic, but I'm not complaining, as I did pretty much line myself up for that! Should it be any comfort to you I can butture you that I am adjusting my thinking on this subject, with particular reference to the point about not realising that my judgement could be-will be affected. Maybe we should all keep this matter under review.

Very well put. Incidents tend to be manufactured by the bad driving of the person doing the moaning. I drove from Welwyn Garden to Leamington Spa last...

Beg pardon, that might seem like a lot of waffle again, but perhaps somebody might find it a bit helpful.

Best wishes all, Dave.
