On that route, I'd go Portsmouth St Malo. Much less driving, both in France and the UK. Much of the west coast motorway-dual carriageway system is toll free and relatively uncongested. The ferry is great, particularly southbound. The ferry leaves Portsmouth in the evening, giving loads of time to get to the port. You get an evening in the bars-restaurants and then get a full night's sleep, breakfast and you're deposited refreshed on the road system at about 8 in the morning ready for an epic drive (remember to take lots of breaks and cut your journey short at a Formule 1 for a few euros if you feel tired). Ensure you book a cabin, though. The reclining seats (or nothing at all) is no fun, as you get trodden on and screamed at by feral kids at 3am.
I use this route whenever possible. You can get further with less fatigue expensive. However, this route has an absolutely fantastic boat, which is fast (only 18 hours) and has an amazing swimming pool-lagoon with sliding glbutt roof. If money is no object and the non-daily schedule permits, this is definitely the way to go.
