The Dutch government plans to establish a pilot scheme under which 1,000 motorists will be rewarded for leaving their cars at home during the morning peak hours.
Selected car owners will be paid between Û2 and Û5 not to use their vehicles on the A12 motorway between Zoetermeer and The Hague from 7am and 9am. Some of the volunteers may receive a navigation system as a reward.
The Department of Waterways and Public Work said last Friday that the trial will begin in the first half of 2006 and will cost Û300,000.
Officials want to establish whether the offer of rewards can cut the number of people using a car during the morning rush period.
A similar experiment will be carried out on the northern ring around Amsterdam.
