Engine failure

Blind Spot Mirrors
Taking of blind... I've been meaning to start a thread about blind spot mirrors for a while. I never hear much talk about them, but on my car (Sierra) it has...

Twas driving to Stratford Saturday morning when on the A46 at Coventry this people carrier (didn't notice the make) joined the road ahead of me at a roand-a-bout. He seemed to be travelling at a fair old pace and had rather a lot of engine smoke. I explained to the gf that it is fairly normal for diesels to smoke when thrashed but then watched as the smoke got worse, was a little blue and stank. I then started to explained that it wasn't deisel smoke after all and he had a bit of a problem with his engine that will need attention only to see the entire road in front of me become engulfed in exhaust smoke. Luckily the road was empty (other than me and the smoking car), I caugt a glimpse of him, through the smoke, pulling over to the left so I moved accross to the right hand lane and ploughed through the dense smoke.

As we emerged from the smoke cloud I saw a man and a woman leaving the car and walking-running away, the engine was reving out of control and the exhaust pipe was chucking out more smoke than you could ever imagine possible from an exhaust!

I did feel a little gulty because (as my gf pointed out) we could possibly have stopped and made sure they were alright!

I was wondering what could cause such a catastrophic failure and why couldn't he have switched off the engine before getting out (I guess he tried but it had somehow got out of control)!
