What needs to be done is R&D on other sources of energy to produce the electricity to run our soceity, such as solar, wind, hydro and so on. The current technology for these may not be the best, but it is a start and hopefully will lead to better technology in a few years. That is if the oilman running the country will allow it...

The sooner the better, although in the long run, I believe that we are going to have to give up personal vehicles for most transportation and only use a personal vehicle for those trips for which using mbutt transit would not be practical. Somehow, I see us (here in America, anyways) possiblly going back to having street cars run on electricity (with an electrified rail to provide power as opposed to overhead lines) as a means of getting around. Certain elements in our soceity won't like it, but they are going to have to deal with it.
Minimising the use of fossel fuel (such as 250MPG hybrids, if they exist) is a good start, but fossil fuel use can be eliminated over time if we are willing to put in the R&D to develop alternate sources of energy. Particularly those that lead to the generation of electricity which is the way I think we need to head...
That begs the question: are we willing to do what needs to be done?
