Greed on many people's part is the root of our energy problems, plus the willingly overlooked fact that fossil fuels are truly finite. Our present society may not even be sustainable with anything but fossil fuels. There are too many people and too many mobile energy needs for known alternatives to cover. A much smaller population might be able to survive on renewables, but not the billions we have today, especially at American levels.
A hyped alternative fuel, hydrogen, is an energy carrier, not a energy source. Bush (and Arnold in California) like hydrogen because it goes over well with a public reluctant to actually conserve energy. People would rather have technology maintain their lifestyles than cut back on anything. We could end up using more petroleum than ever to create adequate hydrogen supplies.
I don't see much public recognition that we may have an intractable energy problem or true scarcity of water, etc.. They buttume science will take care of us but they elect Creationists like Bush who barely understand what science is telling them (use less, waste less and stop being obsessed with mindless growth).
