Also note the US Supreme Court has affirmed the legality of helmet laws.
The more correct comparison for a car would be wearing a seatbelt vs. wearing a helmet for the motorcycle. Both reduce the chances of rest in an accident by the same amount, and both also reduce serious injuries In most states, buckling up is the law. Wearing a helmet of some sort should be the same for motorcycles.
Fewer helmets, more rests 1798Actually, judges are interpreting the Consbreastution. And they are saying that the Consbreastution has no provision saying that the government cannot require them to wear...
And I'd caution motorcyclists against thinking this is unduely harsh or restrictive . On the contrary. In many European countries, not only do the have requirements for helmets, but they also often have restrictions on the size of the engine that can be on the motorcycle. Unlike the typical car, a motorcycle in the US is often grossly overpowered and can accelerate very quickly and doesn't necessarily brake as easily as a car. As the increased rest rate in many high performance sportscars shows, too much horsepower can lead to the inability to keep the vehicle under control, especially if the driver is inexperienced. Don't believe me- look at the typical insurance rate of a car like a Mustang- it's higher than your average Honda Civic.
So in short, I believe you should be greatful that we "cagers" only are demanding that you wear a helmet and refrain from riding a bike without a muffler. We can hear you and see you just fine without the obnoxious noise.
