Forth Road Bridge Voucher Replacement 1696

Before people could afford cars, they used to live within walking distance or local bus trip to their place of work. Cars are the only things which have made cars essential. For 40 years I always lived close enough to work to walk, even when for some years it was about an hours walk each way. My only 'real need' for a car is for trips out of town a couple of times a week to places that can't be easily reached by public transport. There is nothing in the natural order of things which makes cars an essential part of life; they've become so through commercial interests, social and personal choice, and government policy. However, in many cases, it's still a personal life choice to put up with a long commute. And the 'sensible' solution will come when social-environmental policy reflects the necessity for change or when fuel and environmental crises force change; I suspect it would be the latter, since doing what is needed, rather than what people think they want, is a vote loser, and our politicians exist to attract votes rather than draw attention to, and deal with, reality. Meantime, we should continue to discuss how best to re-arrange the deckchairs.
