Yeah, that's why I excluded civil war. Agree oil wasn't a factor then. As for WWI, it's not about the oil that was used, it's about the fact we *had* plentiful oil to use.

Well, I once lived in a country in western europe. I have only been to one particular country other than the UK, and yes that was 20 years ago so this may no longer be relevant. I recall back then that the "burbs" were organized differently than they are here: more like concentrated towns with centers and a rail stop, surrounded by farms. Not mcmansion-strip retail sprawl like we have here in the U.S.

I went to Japan earlier this year, Kyoto. Kyoto is a sprawling city, but once you head out of town, there aren't any suburbs like we have here in the U.S. It quickly drops off into sparse rural living with lots of rice paddies. You feel transported backwards in time.

And you certainly don't see mcmansions either. The home we stayed at was considered by local standards to be a "mansion" and it was 1700 sq feet. (And designed with energy efficiency in mind, with radiant floor heating and smart design to take maximum advantage of pbuttive solar).

Its clearly an example of modern first world economys being robust enough that they can survive that sort of thing fine. Nope, WW1 had very little to do with oil at all. Neither...

Yeah, I suppose that is the next step. I still don't see it as being sustainable over the long haul, but perhaps enough to get us through the transition to a different way of life and-or alternative energy discovery.
