Gas: The good 'ol days 2229

And cheap oil didnt have much to do with the rather deep financial poo some countrys got into as a result of it either, particularly england and germany.

The evidence is in on what brought an end to the depression, the keynesian deficit spending that Roosevelt and Hitler both did.

The english didnt do that to anything like the same extent and they didnt see the same revival of the economy until the war was that in spades for them.

Russia didnt even have the great depression at all.

Yes, because europe chose to tax gasoline quite heavily.

Thats why the didnt see anything like the gas guzzlers the US had.

That isnt really that true of britain or germany.

Not really. You have to consider the living standards too. The US has always been able to afford to spend a lot more on that consumer level spending stuff than say western europe.

What really matters is the day to day stuff. The stuff you do once a year or so doesnt have much effect on budgets distance wise and many use planes instead of cars for that now anyway.

Yeah, its mostly lack of experience and pretty high density living.

It doesnt happen in Korea or Taiwan or China.

Cant see it myself. The full commercialisation of almost all technology still happens first in the US for various reasons and I cant see that stopping any time soon.

I dont believe that will happen much. What you have seen for over half a century or more now is mature technologys moving offshore to low labor cost countrys, but that didnt stop new ones being developed to replace them, everything from credit cards to fast food to the net etc.

Sure, but there is a real sense in which that was always inevitable as SE asia eventually got its act into gear and gave up on war etc. Korea and China in spades.

Its completely different for the US and has been for more than a century now.

Rod Speed But we remained strong enough to help pull them out of it. Every time there is a war, lots of $ goes into development of military technologies. It's...

As Churchill realised after Pearl Harbour, the immense industrial strength of the US meant that it was just a matter of time and detail that Japan would lose after they were stupid enough to ensure that the US couldnt just ignore that war and hope it went away.

Sure, but it clearly doesnt apply to say New York.

Yes, if the price of oil continues to increase north americans will certainly have to get off their lard arses and stop using it for heating lossy houses. Most of the rest of the world has done that already and most dont use oil for that anymore.

Yeah, if you dont like the pollution cars produce, you clearly werent around at the time when everything was horse drawn -)
