buttuming for the moment that your statement is true, whose fault is that? My parents managed to find a home that was about 4 blocks away from my elementary school; my mom walked with me on my first day of kindergarten, but after that I walked on my own - rain, sleet, snow, or shine.

When I moved to SoCal - where the personal automobile is king and the only time you see people walking is when they are going to or from their cars - I picked a house that was within 2 blocks of the elementary school. It also happened to be within walking distance of two big shopping centers, several bus stops, and a train station. That was 10 years ago; today, I still live in that same part of town and still enjoy those same advantages.

Anyone with half a brain would realize that driving all over creation in heavy traffic is a significant detraction from the overall quality of life that they can experience, and that it is well worth taking slightly inferior job that is closer to home (or moving home closer to where the good job is). After all, what good is a little more money when you have no free time in which to spend it because you spend an extra 10 hours per week sucking exhaust fumes in a 6-lane parking lot?
